Acorns pumpkins and squirrels oh my! This quilt uses a fun fabric layer cake to create a quick and easy quilted throw! The quilt pattern is simple to make with the help of Creative Grids Stripology™ Rulers. Baby Lock sewing machines make it easy to get perfect ¼” seams. View printable instructions.
Materials:
- GE Designs-Amalie Pattern (lap size quilt was used from the pattern)
- 1 Layer cake of 42- 10” squares of coordinating fabric. For this project the Moda Squirrelly Girl Bunny Hill Designs fabric collection was used. #2970LC
- Additional fabric backing and binding fabric measurements included in the pattern.
- 2 yards of border fabric. A border was added to the quilt not featured in the pattern.
- Please note: If you add a border additional backing fabric will be needed.
- Quilt Batting for selected quilt size.
- Madeira® Cotona thread to match fabric
- Rotary cutter mat and ruler
- Temporary adhesive spray (optional)
- Optional: The GE Design pattern uses the Creative Grids Stripology™ Squared Ruler.
Tools:
- Baby Lock® sewing and quilting machine
- ¼” piecing foot (some options that work with most Baby Lock machines include BLSO-QF (shown) BLSO-QGF ESG-QGF ESG-QF)
Steps:
-
The fabric requirements cutting instructions and pattern instructions are all included with the Amalie pattern. Follow those instructions to create the quilt top.
-
Set up the machine for sewing:
-
Thread the machine.
-
Attach a ¼” piecing foot to the machine.
-
Wind the bobbin with the same thread as used for the upper thread.
-
Set machine to a center needle stitch to create a ¼” seam. (Q-01)
-
-
Following the pattern instructions sew the blocks together using a 1/4” seam allowance.
-
Press the seam toward the darker fabric.
-
Note: pressing is very important and should always be performed after each seam has been stitched. The quilt top will have a neater and more professional look.
-
-
Continue to sew the sections together in the order per the quilting pattern.
-
Using the ¼” piecing foot ensures all the seams are consistent throughout the quilt.
-
Again this foot will require a center needle position.
-
If your machine has a built-in Guideline marker this also aids in piecing perfect seams for quilting.
-
-
Once the quilt top is completed add a 5” border around the quilt top (if desired).
-
Remember that if you add a border you need to allow for extra backing fabric.
-
-
Press the quilt top. Layer together the quilt top batting and backing. Quilt the top as desired.
-
Optional: This quilt was quilted on the Baby Lock Crown Jewel 3 with the Pro-Stitcher software.
-
The quilting pattern was digital edge-to-edge quilt pattern purchased from Quilters Niche called AN-090 Squirrels v2.

-
-
Once quilted trim any extra batting and backing fabric.
-
Attach the binding to the back of the quilt using a ¼” seam allowance and your favorite binding method.
-
Snuggle up with your cozy lap quilt on those cold fall days!!
