Looking for a quick project to sew with all of those pretty fabric selvages? Make a selvage pincushion in just a few simple steps with this tutorial! This makes a great stocking stuffer for the sewing lover in your life. Use this same method and larger fabric squares to make a pretty throw pillow!

Materials:

  • Handful of fabric selvages trimmed with at least 1/4 of extra fabric past the text
  • 8 x 5 scrap of lightweight fusible interfacing
  • 8 x 5 fabric for pincushion back
  • Handful of polyester fiber filling
  • Iron

Totally

  1. Sort through your saved selvages for pretty colors and interesting text.

Totally

  1. Place the interfacing in front of you with the bumpy (fusible) side facing up. Starting at one short end place a single selvage on top of the interfacing. Press in place with an iron.

Totally

  1. Continue slightly overlapping selvages in this manner pressing them to the interfacing. You’ll sew them down later to secure.

Totally

  1. Trim off the selvage ends that extend past the 8” x 5” piece of interfacing.

Totally

  1. Sew around the perimeter of the selvage panel 1/8” from the edges to secure the selvages in place. Sew a straight line 1/8” from the edge of each selvage as it overlaps the one below it. Your end goal is to secure any loose flaps of selvage.

Totally

  1. Place the selvage panel and the 8 x 5 fabric piece right sides together. Stitch around the perimeter 1/4 from the edges leaving a 2 gap in one short side for turning.

Totally

  1. Turn the pin cushion right side out poking out each of the corners. Fill the opening of the pin cushion with fiber fill. Hand stitch or machine stitch the opening closed.
